Scripture Reading(s)

Psalm 121

121:1 I lift up my eyes to the hills– from where will my help come?

121:2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

121:3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

121:4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

121:5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.

121:6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

121:7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

121:8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

Reflections

Lydia.jpgDuring times of crisis and fear, it is hard to remain calm and in control. Often times when faced with an unexpected trial it can be scary and leave us feeling fearful and hopeless. However, this passage reminds us that despite the hard times and dangers that we face, God is always in complete control. Nothing takes Him by surprise and nothing scares Him. He is a God who is above all things and we can find our true rest and comfort in Him.

This Psalm is a promise to us that whatever we face in life, He is always there to protect and sustain us when we are feeling at our weakest. The truth that is pouring from this Psalm is that despite the evil that goes on, He is the one that allows for these things to happen and by allowing it, He can also control it and bring it to an end.

I think one of the most powerful messages that this Psalm portrays is found in verse 14  ‘He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” That is such a powerful picture of just how much in control God is and how sovereign He is. Furthermore, it gives us a picture of comfort in knowing that we can find rest both in our souls and physically knowing that God is always at work and on the move to lovingly protect and guide us.

There is nothing that is outside the control of God’s hand. Trust and lean on His promises. He has plotted out the course of our lives before the beginning of time and He will be sure to give us His strength that we need to carry through this life. With God on our side, there is nothing that we cant face.

He who keeps you will not slumber.

Some have wondered where God is at certain times. But God is not hiding. He is not sleeping or on the pot. He is ruling and reigning with his heavenly hosts. He is working out all things for you and I. He hears our prayers and He has our redemption already in order. The only question is whether or not we will recognize that.

Do not get carried away by fear and doubt. Do not let the troubles of this world cause you to worry. We have a God that not only can move mountains but He created them. He laid the foundations of the galaxy. Be bold in your prayer and seek the Lord knowing that He has not left you.
