Scripture Reading(s)
Psalm 78:1-7
78:1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,
78:3 things that we have heard and known, that our ancestors have told us.
78:4 We will not hide them from their children; we will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
78:5 He established a decree in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach to their children;
78:6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and rise up and tell them to their children,
78:7 so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.
Reflections
We will not hide them from their children; we will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. (Psalm 78:4)
One of the most important tasks we will have as Christians is raising our children up in a way the both honors the Lord and teaches them the faith. The majority of Christians in church today came form Christians families. Some of them converted once their own but the vast majority were already familiar with the faith because their parents took them to church. While it may not be true that all children who grow up hearing about the Lord will end up being Christians, it is true that they have a higher chance.
Psalm 22 instructs us to train our children in the ways of the Lord so that they will be believers also.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Whatever God has done for you, it should be communicated to your children and to people in your life. We should always have a testimony ready on our lips. If you do not then ask yourself today, “what has the Lord done in my life”? Write it down. Count your blessings. Keep them close by. You will see a noticeable difference in your faith when you are not forgetting the greatness of God.
