Dear Norf Norf Mom, No, Music From Our Generation Was Not More Wholesome

If you have not seen it yet, the internet is having a meltdown over the meltdown is a Christian mom who posted a youtube video about reading the lyrics of a rap song that came on the radio. Before we address the issues let’s watch the video.

Now, I want to point out how shocked this mother is by these lyrics. Where has she been living? First, it appears she has a case of early onset Jevenoia. As I have already demonstrated in the “What’s Wrong With Kids These Days”  post, every generation fears that the next generation is worse than they were. But they look at their own past through rose colored glasses.

Case in point, meltdown mom thinks that music in the 90’s was less vulgar. I think perhaps she might have been a bit bubbled. I am assuming we are about the same age and I can attest that I personally listened to much worse music back in my heathen days. For starters, here are a few bands that would put rap music to shame.

  • ICP
  • Mindless Self Indulgence
  • Cannibal Corpse
  • Slayer
  • Type O Negative
  • Eminem
  • ………….. and the list goes on

Now these are mostly popular bands but a slew of lesser known bands existed that would put these to shame on the filth level. But what about rap? Has rap gotten worse since the 90’s? No, not even close. Here are some rappers who were so terrible many stores refused to sell them and kids all over the country were getting grounded for listening to them. Below each artist are a few of their most choice songs.

  • Missy Elliott
    • Work it
    • Get your freak on
    • My neck, my back (maybe this is the most repulsive song ever)
  • Naughty By Nature
    • O.P.P. (A song about having sex with other people’s significant others, pr spouses)
  • Snoop Dog
    • Gin and Juice
  • H-Town
    • Knockin’ Da Boots
  • Color Me Badd
    • I wanna sex you up
  • Boys II Men
    • I’ll make love to you
  • Sisqo
    • Thong song
  • Ginuwine
    • Pony
  • 2Pac
    • I get around
  • TLC
    • Ain’t too proud to beg
  • LL Cool J
    • Doing it
  • R. Kelly (virtually every song he ever wrote)
    • 12 play

I could go on but you get the point. I had the same conversation with my mother when she introduced me to Clarence Carter (the guy who wrote Strokin). Popular music has always had dirty elements. Everyone from ZZ-Top, to Marvin Gaye, and Frank Zappa. There is no decade of music that is devoid of terrible pop artists.

I am sure the mother in this video was a tad bit sheltered and was not aware of what was out there when she was a teen. But this is why people think Christians are so crazy. They don’t bother to think outside of their bubbles. It’s even worse for the ones who were home schooled. They are unaware of even the most basic things in popular culture. I am not suggesting that they should have listened to more dirty music but just that they need to calm down just a tad and maybe do a little research before having a meltdown publicly.

Seriously, these rants make all Christians look ignorant.
