Today\u00a0I was in a Christmas themed service and I none of the song credits were at the bottom of the screen, which naturally made me wonder&#8230;..Where exactly did these songs even come from? Mostly likely existed in multiple African forms before being collected by Work Jr.<\/p>\n<p>The modern version was popularized by\u00a0<a title=\"Peter, Paul and Mary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter,_Paul_and_Mary\">Peter, Paul and Mary<\/a>, along with their musical director,\u00a0Milt Okun, adapted and rewrote &#8220;Go Tell It on the Mountain&#8221; as &#8220;Tell It on the Mountain&#8221;, their lyrics referring specifically to\u00a0Exodus\u00a0and using the phrase &#8220;Let my people go,&#8221; but referring implicitly to the\u00a0Civil Rights\u00a0struggle of the early 1960s.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Go_Tell_It_on_the_Mountain_(song)\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Geographic Origin<\/h3>\n<p>The origins are attributed to African-American folk music, so it is possible that both African and American influences lead to the compilation of this song. It is likely that it was African in origin due to the fact that John Wesley Work Jr. was an African American who frequently collected African works. Wesley wrote probably more hymns than any other composer in history.<\/p>\n<p>The popular version we know today is the result of alterations by various hands, by Wesley&#8217;s co-worker\u00a0<a title=\"George Whitefield\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Whitefield\">George Whitefield<\/a>\u00a0who changed the opening couplet to the familiar one, and by\u00a0<a title=\"Felix Mendelssohn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Felix_Mendelssohn\">Felix Mendelssohn<\/a>. It was written by\u00a0poet\u00a0<a title=\"Placide Cappeau\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Placide_Cappeau\">Placide Chapeau<\/a>. The original poem was titled\u00a0&#8220;Minuit, chr\u00e9tiens&#8221; (Midnight, Christians).<\/p>\n<h3>Date Composed<\/h3>\n<p>1847.<\/p>\n<h3>Occasion for composition<\/h3>\n<p>The poem was written for the Roquelaure church, at the end of the year 1843, the church organ was recently renovated. To celebrate the event, the parish priest asked Cappeau, native from this town, to write a Christmas poem.
