Untie it and bring it here.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25753\" class=\"text Luke-19-31\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>If anyone asks you, \u2018Why are you untying it?\u2019 you shall say this: \u2018The Lord has need of it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-ESV-25754\" class=\"text Luke-19-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>So those who were sent went away and found it\u00a0just as he had told them.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25755\" class=\"text Luke-19-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, \u201cWhy are you untying the colt?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25756\" class=\"text Luke-19-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>And they said, \u201cThe Lord has need of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-ESV-25757\" class=\"text Luke-19-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25758\" class=\"text Luke-19-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>And as he rode along, they\u00a0spread their cloaks on the road.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25759\" class=\"text Luke-19-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>As he was drawing near\u2014already on the way down the Mount of Olives\u2014the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice\u00a0for all the mighty works that they had seen,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25760\" class=\"text Luke-19-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>saying,\u00a0\u201cBlessed is\u00a0the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and\u00a0glory in the highest!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-25761\" class=\"text Luke-19-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, \u201cTeacher, rebuke your disciples.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"text Luke-19-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>He answered,\u00a0<span class=\"woj\">\u201cI tell you, if these were silent,\u00a0the very stones would cry out.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Observations &amp; Reflections<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The triumphal entry is such an important facet of the gospel message that all 4 gospel writers include this in their texts. That is a very rare feature. However, not all 4 gospel writers told the story identically. As we have already observed, each writer makes their own minor adjustments. Most natably, Matthew and John include an OT quote as fulfilled prophecy. The passage cited is from Zechariah 9 which is a prophetic word about the coming of Zion&#8217;s king, just before the appearance of the Lord. It is critical that this passage is read because if it&#8217;s important enough to Jesus to quote from then the passage in Zechariah should be referenced before reading the rest of the gospel. Jesus is setting the stage. The contents of this prophecy was expected to immediately be fulfilled.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span id=\"en-ESV-23009\" class=\"text Zech-9-9\">The Coming King of Zion<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Zech-9-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-9\">Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-9\">Behold,\u00a0your king is coming to you;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-9\">righteous and having salvation is he,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-9\">humble and mounted on a donkey,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-9\">on a colt, the foal of a donkey.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-23010\" class=\"text Zech-9-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-10\">and\u00a0the war horse from Jerusalem;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-10\">and the battle bow shall be cut off,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-10\">and\u00a0he shall speak peace to the nations;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-10\">his rule shall be from sea to sea,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-10\">and from\u00a0the River\u00a0to the ends of the earth.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-23011\" class=\"text Zech-9-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>As for you also, because of\u00a0the blood of my covenant with you,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-11\">I will set your prisoners free from\u00a0the waterless pit.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-23012\" class=\"text Zech-9-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Return to your stronghold, O\u00a0prisoners of hope;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-12\">today I declare that\u00a0I will restore to you double.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-23013\" class=\"text Zech-9-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>For\u00a0I have bent Judah as my bow;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-13\">I have made Ephraim its arrow.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-13\">I will stir up your sons, O Zion,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-13\">against your sons,\u00a0O Greece,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-13\">and wield you like a warrior&#8217;s sword.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"en-ESV-23014\" class=\"text Zech-9-14\">The\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0Will Save His People<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Zech-9-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Then the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0will appear over them,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-14\">and\u00a0his arrow will go forth like lightning;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-14\">the Lord\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">God<\/span>\u00a0will sound the trumpet<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-14\">and will march forth in\u00a0the whirlwinds\u00a0of the south.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-23015\" class=\"text Zech-9-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>The\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0of hosts\u00a0will protect them,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-15\">and\u00a0they shall devour,\u00a0and tread down the sling stones,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-15\">and\u00a0they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-15\">and be full like a bowl,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-15\">drenched\u00a0like the corners of the altar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-ESV-23016\" class=\"text Zech-9-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>On that day the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0their God will save them,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-16\">as\u00a0the flock of his people;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Zech-9-16\">for\u00a0like the jewels of a crown<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-16\">they shall shine on his land.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-23017\" class=\"text Zech-9-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-17\">Grain shall make the young men flourish,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Zech-9-17\">and new wine the young women.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>(Zechariah 9:9-17)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that Zechariah is fresh in the mind, read the gospel passages of Jesus entering Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Matthew 25:14-30<\/th>\n<th>Mark 11:1-11<\/th>\n<th>Luke 19:28-40<\/th>\n<th>John 12:12-19<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,<\/p>\n<p>2 saying to them, \u201cGo into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.<\/p>\n<p>3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, \u2018The Lord needs them,\u2019 and he will send them at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,<\/p>\n<p>5 \u201c<em>Say to the daughter of Zion,\u2018Behold, your king is coming to you,,humble, and mounted on a donkey,,on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.\u2019<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.<\/p>\n<p>7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.<\/p>\n<p>8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.<\/p>\n<p>9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, \u201cHosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, \u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11 And the crowds said, \u201cThis is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.\u201d<\/td>\n<td>1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples<\/p>\n<p>2 and said to them, \u201cGo into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.<\/p>\n<p>3 If anyone says to you, \u2018Why are you doing this?\u2019 say, \u2018The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it.<\/p>\n<p>5 And some of those standing there said to them, \u201cWhat are you doing, untying the colt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go.<\/p>\n<p>7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it.<\/p>\n<p>8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.<\/p>\n<p>9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, \u201cHosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!<\/p>\n<p>10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,<\/p>\n<p>15 \u201c<em>Fear not, daughter of Zion;behold, your king is coming,,sitting on a donkey&#8217;s colt!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.<\/p>\n<p>17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.<\/p>\n<p>18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.<\/p>\n<p>19 So the Pharisees said to one another, \u201cYou see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; entry into Jerusalem is the turning point in the gospel story. Jesus had previously been healing the ministering for almost 3 years and it has all lead to this. Would the kingdom of God appear and usher in the &#8220;day of the Lord&#8221;? Would Jesus setup an earthly kingdom for eternity that will rule in justice and peace? Would he finally overthrow the power of the religious leaders and especially the Romans? If one had not previously known the story of Jesus it would seem that all these things were about to happen.
