Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, \u2018Come along now and sit down to eat\u2019?<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-25660\" class=\"text Luke-17-8\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Won\u2019t he rather say, \u2018Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink\u2019?<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-25661\" class=\"text Luke-17-9\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"text Luke-17-10\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, \u2018We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Observations &amp; Reflections<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4182\" src=\"http:\/\/dustoffthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Justin-Holmes1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Justin-Holmes1.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dustoffthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Justin-Holmes1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dustoffthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Justin-Holmes1-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/dustoffthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Justin-Holmes1-198x198.jpg 198w, https:\/\/dustoffthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Justin-Holmes1-180x180.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>This parable by Jesus is more of an illustration than a parable. It is difficult to see how the parable connects with the surrounding passages as it appears to be off-topic. However, it&#8217;s only recorded in Luke and it&#8217;s possible that Luke had no other indication from Mark on where it was supposed to go so he made the best choice for location that he knew how. Either way, it appears that this saying of Jesus was preserved somewhere in either Q or proto-Luke and it&#8217;s a gem.<\/p>\n<p>The parable serves as a reminder that the servant is never greater as the master, a lesson that they will soon be reminded of once they enter Jerusalem and Jesus is apprehended. In our own lives we must remind ourselves the value of humility.
