They also believed that essentially just being a Jew would get you on the right side of it. This is why Jesus warned them saying that they must bear fruit, not just just claim to be children of Abraham.

This is not unlike Christians today. The “saved by faith” slogan is so common that people forget that we have to actually live by that faith. As Jesus’ brother said,

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does itprofit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:14-18)

Indeed, having faith is more than believing; it is a way of living. We must move beyond a mere mental or emotional state of believing and let our faith animate our lives and our actions.

[Featured image from www.goodnewsdudes.com]

Scripture Reading(s) Matthew 3:1-12 3:1 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 3:2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3:3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of … Read more

[2280
35,6110,6111,2410,2286,2346,5551,2344,5552,2284,6870,2281,5550,2285,302,6112
