<\/p>\n3:1 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming,<\/p>\n
3:2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”<\/p>\n
3:3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'”<\/p>\n
3:4 Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.<\/p>\n
3:5 Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan,<\/p>\n
3:6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.<\/p>\n
3:7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?<\/p>\n
3:8 Bear fruit worthy of repentance.<\/p>\n
3:9 Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.<\/p>\n
3:10 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.<\/p>\n
3:11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.<\/p>\n
3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”<\/p>\n

Bear fruit worthy of repentance.\u00a0Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.\u00a0Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Unlike the Sadducees, the Pharisees believed in an afterlife. They also believed that essentially just being a Jew would get you on the right side of it. This is why Jesus warned them saying that they must bear fruit, not just just claim to be children of Abraham.<\/p>\n
This is not unlike Christians today. The “saved by faith” slogan is so common that people forget that we have to actually live by that faith. As Jesus’ brother said,<\/p>\n
What\u00a0does it<\/i>\u00a0profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?\u00a0<\/span>15\u00a0<\/span>If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,\u00a0<\/span>16\u00a0<\/span>and one of you says to them, \u201cDepart in peace, be warmed and filled,\u201d but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what\u00a0does it<\/i>profit?\u00a0<\/span>17\u00a0<\/span>Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.<\/span><\/p>\n
18\u00a0<\/span>But someone will say, \u201cYou have faith, and I have works.\u201d Show me your faith without your\u00a0works, and I will show you my faith by my\u00a0works. (James 2:14-18)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Indeed, having faith is more than believing; it is a way of living. We must move beyond a mere mental or emotional state of believing and let our faith animate our lives and our actions.<\/p>\n
