Daily Bible Reading Devotional [Luke 12:54-56] November 11, 2017

Interpreting the Time

54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Observations and Reflections

Jesus is still in a long lecture block with some very difficult words for the audience. The people still not fully understanding that the Kingdom of God is arrived and that Jesus is the messiah, are rebuked for being able to interpret the weather but not the obvious truth sitting right in front of them.

This is similar to the sin of the Pharisees who saw Jesus perform miracles right in front their faces but still claimed that Jesus was casting out demons in the name of Beelzebub. It’s a baffling turn of events.

As Christians we get to see God at work. We taste the goodness of the Lord. These are the moments that strengthen our faith and make our witness strong. We must always ready to see and hear what the Lord is doing so that we do not miss the message like the audience Jesus is rebuking in Luke 12.
