Jesus Heals A Boy with an Unclean Spirit

37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God.

Observations and Reflections

Lydia.jpgThe name of Jesus Christ bears all the authority and power in this world. There is nothing in this world that can match it, overpower it or challenge it. When we go out in this world with Jesus Christ moving in our hearts, we can with boldness and confidence face anything that the world throws at us.

Jesus Christ is the true source of power and strength. This passage is an indication that there will be moments in which our faith will be weak and it is in that moment that God shows us that it is His power alone that is working through our lives to accomplish the tasks that we cannot face on our own.

I love this passage because it serves as a reminder that even though our current circumstance may seem impossible and challenging to face, we can rest assured that with God in control, we heave nothing to fear. Jesus enacted His authority over the demons many times in scripture and He will continue to do so again in the hard times that we face.

There is nothing that goes on in this world that is out of His control. My husband and I faced one of the greatest challenges within our first year of marriage. Immigration policies told us that had to stay separated until my paperwork was complete. We were told the worst case scenario which was that we were going to have to stay separated for a year. With countless family members and church friends praying for us, our paperwork was completed with a span of 6 months. Thats half the amount of time that it would normally take.

God’s authority and power trumps any other means of earthly “rule” in this world.  He is the true ruler and king over this world and we can rest assured that He will always take care of our needs.
