Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19
116:1 I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my supplications.
116:2 Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
116:12 What shall I return to the LORD for all his bounty to me?
116:13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,
116:14 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.
116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones.
116:16 O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your serving girl. You have loosed my bonds.
116:17 I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name of the LORD.
116:18 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,
116:19 in the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the LORD!
The cry that we hear in this Psalm is not one of distress or anguish. It is in fact a song of thanksgiving for God answering a prayer when in time of need. It is a response to the loving faithfulness that God has shown and a recognition of how gracious God is.
How often do we stop and thank God when He answers our prayers, especially in a time of need. Whenever we come to God with a heart that is broken and seeking for God’s deliverance from a hard circumstance, we must also come back to Him with that same level of thankfulness for when He answers us.
A thankful heart is also one that is marked and characterized by humility. The Psalmist here is laying everything down and completely surrendering to the fact that it was God who answered his prayer. Furthermore, he can be a living testimony to others around him. He is now able to spread that joy to others and tell them that he was once in a bad situation, and God answered his prayer.
God is faithful and He will never leave us to struggle and fend for ourselves in a hard circumstance. He is always there at the ready to answer our prayers and offer us peace, deliverance and grace. Let us pursue hearts of trust, thankfulness and humility towards a God who hears us and loves us always both now and forever.
